Edgar Phillips "A Light Shining in Darkness"
Four sets of stunning wings have landed in the gardens at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells and are guaranteed to wow and inspire thousands of visitors this summer.
Renowned stained glass artist, Edgar Phillips has made four large winged glass sculptures that people can interact with becoming part of the artwork; becoming winged wonders.
‘A Light Shining in Darkness’ is a collection of vast white wings and a set of burning red wings that are 7 foot high and 16 foot wide; a multi-coloured sculpture sits patiently beside the Great Hall tower with enclosing bent wings ready to welcome you inside and the fourth sculpture is around 4 foot high and made for children, with brilliant pink glass and white wing tips.
“I really wanted to scale a set of wings for children so they could be involved and enjoy them too” says Edgar. “I wanted people to stand inside and be to scale, it was very important to me that they looked like your size wings and that you could fly with them!”
The inspiration of the pieces came from many walks alongside the Palace moat to relax and find peace at a difficult time in Edgar’s life. One evening whilst watching the swans come in to land with their beautiful wings angled and open, a vision of burning red wings forged into his mind and from that moment he knew he had to make them to move towards a brighter place in his life.
“Out of the darkness certainly has come light in the form of these sculptures. Each piece has impact, power and inspiration and I sincerely hope others discover that everyone has the potential to be bigger and stronger than they may think once they feel these wings around them” says Edgar.
The colours of the wings are considered and inspired, with Edgar adding “at the time it felt like quite a bold artistic choice to create a piece of pure white sculpture when you have thousands of colours to choose from. However, the set of white wings directly represent the swans of Wells and their pure beauty. The red set of wings were created to realise the vision that I had and are so powerful, changing in the light as the sun moves across the sky. Watching people’s reactions to the different coloured wings will be fascinating”.
Edgar has created and donated Two beautiful stained glass windows for St Joseph and St Teresa's school in Wells, Somerset.
Made using traditional method Edgar involved the children of the school by getting each of them to design a quarry for the background which he then painted and fired into the glass.
The glass is installed in the hall of the school.
